Sales of red kiwi fruit faster than previous years

"The kiwi fruit production areas in Guizhou suffered from hailstones and excessive rainfall earlier this season. The pollination rate is relatively low this year and in some production areas the fruit fell from the trees. However, the weather conditions in the second half of the season were perfect. The overall product quality is excellent." This is according to manager Duan of Liangdu Miniho.

The harvest season of red heart kiwi fruit in Guizhou production areas began on the 25th of July and continued until the 15th of September. "Our production volume reached around 8 thousand tons this year. That is more or less the same as in the same period last year. We have already sold close to 6 thousand tons. That is almost double the sales volume compared to last year. We are currently looking to slow down the speed of our sales. We hope to extend the period we can keep our products fresh until February next year, because there is another peak sales period around Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]," explained manager Duan. "As for the price, we adjust our price every year in accordance with domestic market demand. The overall price of red heart kiwi fruit from Guizhou production areas is quite stable this year. The current market price is around 18 yuan [2.56 USD] per 0.5 kg."

"In order to establish our brand and expand our market we organized a series of promotional activities and sampling sessions in supermarkets across the country. Consumer feedback has been great."

When asked how Chinese consumers deal with the high price of fruit, manager Duan stated, "Product quality is key. We have a high-end brand. The price of our fruit is higher than average, but that does not slow down the speed of our sales, especially because the disposable income of Chinese consumers continues to grow and Chinese consumers pay more and more attention to healthy fruits. Chinese consumers are willing to pay higher prices for top-quality fruits. As for export, we have been exporting our kiwi fruit to Taiwan, Canada, and Russia for several years now. Although conditions in the international market are not as good now as they were in previous years, our export volume is still stable."

When asked whether the promotion of red heart kiwi fruit by Zespri will have an impact on the sales of domestic red heart kiwi fruit, manager Duan explained, "the red heart kiwi fruit of Zespri has not yet completely entered the market, so we can not yet predict how the market position of Zespri red heart kiwi fruit will affect consumers."

The red heart kiwi fruit variety can only be kept fresh for a relatively short period of time, which complicates storage and distribution, and negatively affects competition with other kiwi fruit varieties.

"We store our kiwi fruit in advanced air-conditioned warehouses to guarantee the highest product quality and the best flavor.  We transport our kiwi fruit in refrigerated trucks that keep our fruit at temperatures between 2 and 6 degrees Celsius. In the air-conditioned warehouses we can keep the kiwi fruit fresh for about 8 months," explained manager Duan.

Three years ago, Miniho started using Compac installations imported from New Zealand. The installation takes pictures of the fruit, selects and weighs the fruit, and measures the moisture and sugar content of the fruit. The Compac installations have a processing capacity of 200 tons per day. "The automated installations help us greatly reduce labor cost and improve efficiency of selecting and packaging fruit. This helps us guarantee even greater product quality."
