Export volume of Chinese onions from Gansu increased thirteen-fold

According to news from the Lanzhou Customs Office, the export price and volume of onions from Gansu show an upward trend. The export volume reached 5,819.7 tons in the first 10 months of 2019, which is an expansion of 1,320% in comparison with the same period in the previous year. The value reached 19.17 million yuan [2.72 million USD], which is an increase of 1,620% in comparison with the same period in the previous year. The average export price is 3.3 yuan [0.47 USD] per kg, which is a rise of 20.9% in comparison with the same period in the previous year.

Weather conditions severely reduced the onion production volume in India, one of the largest onion producers in the world. India temporarily halted onion export to ensure a sufficient supply for their domestic market. Markets with a strong demand for onions, such as Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, turned to China for onion import. The average price and export volume of Gansu onions has rapidly increased every month of this year so far.

Of the top 12 export markets for Gansu onions, most are in Southeast Asia, West Asia, and South Asia, with the exception of the Netherlands, Japan, and Spain. The four countries heading this list are Thailand, the Netherlands, Israel, and Vietnam.
