Average vegetable harvest in Austria:

More lettuce harvested, but fewer cabbages

The field and horticultural vegetable harvest in Austria was average this year. At 611,500 tonnes, the volume was 1 percent above the five-year average, Statistik Austria reported on Wednesday. Compared to the below-average 2018 harvest, the volume increased by 9 per cent despite the cool May weather and dry summer.

Onion production -responsible for almost a quarter of total vegetable production- remained at a low level for the third year in a row at 141,600 tonnes due to drought and severe pest infestation, according to the statisticians. Due to a larger cultivation area, the onion harvest was 7 percent higher than in 2018, but 13 percent below the five-year average. The harvest of cabbage was also below average at 36,300 tonnes due to pests (-15 per cent compared to the five-year average).

The lettuce harvest amounted to 46,800 tonnes, 6 percent more than the five-year average. Tomato production stagnated at the previous year's level and at 58,300 tonnes was 4 per cent above the five-year average.
