Producers in Antalya, a major city located in southern Turkey, grow prickly cucumbers and export them to Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and Bulgaria.
Farmers in Kumluca district harvest cucumbers in greenhouses and sell them for 3 to 3.50 Turkish Lira (0.47 to 0.55 Euro) per kilo.
Producer Suleyman Kayhan said: "We planted them on September 26 and started to collect them on November 1. We harvest every two days. Usually we receive demands from Russia, but we also export prickly cucumbers to Romania and other countries. They cost around 3 Turkish Lira (0.47 Euro). We expect the prices to increase. We are content with the prices."
Mustafa Eris, the CEO at Kumluca Cetinler Milexim, an exporter company, said: "We export 25 greenhouse products to 21 countries. Tomatoes, aubergines, cucumbers are among our export products. I think that our farmers are satisfied both with prices and quality. The export season is busy during December, January and February. Producers grow a lot of prickly cucumbers in Kumluca and Gazipasa. This is not a well known product in the domestic market, however this cucumber tastes very good"."
