Levarht is a grower and supplier of fruit and vegetables. The most aromatic fruits and vegetables are produced there all year round and they are then exported all over the world. Large quantities of strawberries are also shipped to Japan every year. Strawberries are considered a luxury product in Japan. They are used by bakeries, lunch rooms and cafés to decorate pastries, cakes and other dishes and are processed with the utmost precision. That's why it's important that strawberries are delivered in tip-top shape.
The journey from the Netherlands to Japan is long and the strawberries have to endure a lot. To ensure that they arrive in Japan in perfect condition, Levarht has used a standardized strawberry cushion for transport in recent years. However, this solution was not ideal, as time and again the strawberries started to roll around during transport. As a result, they were damaged and could no longer be used.
Transportable packaging
In order to better protect the strawberries during transport, Levarht decided to look for a tailor-made solution. A new strawberry cushion was to be developed to provide perfect protection for the fruit during transport. When the strawberries arrived in Japan, they had to be in exactly the same position in which they had been placed in the packaging after harvesting. The first step was to contact a supplier of a specific foam. However, since this foam is made of a thicker material than plastic and is, therefore, more difficult to process, it was not possible to shape it into the desired shape. The search was therefore on for a supplier who could punch and form the foam in the desired way.
That is how the company came into contact with Nedupack Thermoforming. "We've worked with Nedupack before when it came to developing different shakers for vegetables, so we already knew what we could expect," says Marcel van der Weijden from Levarht. In cooperation with Levarht, Nedupack then developed the perfect packaging.
Custom-made 'strawberry cushions'
