Berryplant is the largest company devoted to the propagation of raspberries and blackberries in Italy, and also one of the most important in Europe. It has a wide range of around 25 varieties that are licensed by various breeders worldwide and registered by Berrytech, a sister company specialized in the breeding of raspberry and blackberry varieties.
With its advanced facilities and its strict controls on pests and diseases and phenotypic stability, the company focuses on product quality and phytosanitary safety. The nursery is located at high altitudes, free from pests and diseases, and in an ideal climate to be able to deliver high-quality plants in the summer. This is a very important factor for the late crops in Huelva (in Spain) and in Morocco.
The goal of Berrytech is to develop productive, rustic raspberry varieties with a good size, taste and shelf life that are also easy to harvest. For the blackberries, the company aims to find remontant varieties with a good taste and that offer a solution to the problem of color reversal.
The new raspberry varieties will become commercially available in 2020, "when the varieties market will be more competitive and Berryplant will be able to offer more alternatives to raspberry producers," says Sequeira.
