"Large production of sweet potatoes puts prices under pressure

Changhong loquats from Mengzi county in Yunnan are an important product in the Chinese fruit market. The loquats are mainly produced in Mengzi county, Honghe Hani and the Yi autonomous prefecture, Yunnan.

This is the time of year when loquats ripen. Mr. Hao Bo of Honghe Qinyun Zhishang Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. is specialized in the harvest and retail of loquat. He recently shared his view on the current conditions in the loquat industry:

"The loquat harvest began one month ago. The production volume is not bad. Yunnan experienced abundant rainfall this year. The overall flavor is better than last year. The sugar content is high and the fruit is juicy. We can supply loquat until March or April next year. The loquat is an important product for the Chinese fruit market during the winter and spring. The loquat helps to suppress coughing. The fruit is extremely well-suited for any type of consumer."

In addition to loquat, Mr. Hao is also responsible for the retail of sweet potatoes in Yunnan. "The overall plantation volume of sweet potatoes increased this year, and as a result the sweet potato production areas throughout China enjoyed abundant harvests. The current price of sweet potatoes is not that high. The large production volume puts pressure on the market price. Apart from this, the cost price of sweet potatoes rose this year, which further limits the profit margin of farmers and traders in the sweet potato industry."

Mr. Hao is still optimistic. He participated in the Asia Fresh Fruit Exposition in Shanghai this year. He displayed a variety of his products. "This time we decided to display as many of our products as possible, such as sweet potatoes, loquat, corn, and kumquat. We set up a small kitchen where we prepared our products. We did this to attract more visitors to our stand. We handed out samples to participants. We received great feedback from the people who tried our products."
