The harvest season of kumquats in Rong’an has just kicked off. The production and quality are very good this season, and prices are higher compared with the last. Mr. Qin Lianghao, manager of Rong'an Juzhongju, talked about current market conditions and sales performance.
“The harvest season in Rong'an started in November and is expected to last through to next March. In terms of production, although the production area suffered from heavy rains this season, the orchard was not significantly affected and there has been no adverse effect on production,” Mr. Qi said.
“Our growers’ orchards total around 200 mu, and we expect to produce about 1 million kilograms this season. As the production is not significant and our fruit is popular, prices have been rising. Compared with 5-6 yuan/half a kilo five years ago, our current market prices stand at 8-15 yuan/half a kilo, and the premium fruit are sold at prices as high as 30 yuan/half a kilo. ”
Rong'an, Guangxi is known as the “hometown of kumquats in China”, and its fruit is famous for its large production and excellent quality. Kumquats grown there have golden, thin peels, sweet and crisp in taste, and the sugar content can reach 22%-26%. “A few years ago, due to remoteness and lack of suitable sales channels, our fruit were slow to sell during the harvest seasons each year. However, with the increasing popularity of e-commerce platforms, most of our products are now sold through online channels. Every time when a promotion is held on e-commerce platforms, our online sales volume goes through the roof, and there was one time where people scrambled to get our products.”
“As our local sales increase, we are also considering exporting our products to overseas markets. Currently, the challenge for export that we are facing is that our fruit are mostly grown by small growers, and there is a lack of uniform growing standards. We are also working hard to adopt uniformed training and management for techniques, so as to allow customers overseas to try our kumquats as soon as possible,” said the manager.
