Frusoal, the leading citrus growers organization in Portugal, will start exporting organic oranges to the Scandinavian countries next year under the Algarve organic citrus brand, Biogomo.
The first approach to the north European market was made this month with the organization's participation in the largest organic products fair in Sweden, Nordic Organic Food Fair, which took place from November 13 to 14 in Malmö. After establishing contact with potential customers during the two days of the event and checking their interest in the product, Frusoal has announced that the export will start in 2020. The fruits will thus reach Scandinavian consumers between January and March. The marketing of 200 tons is expected in this first year.
The presence of the Portuguese entity at Nordic Organic Food happened in the framework of Frusoal's internationalization plan to increase its sales abroad, co-funded by the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Program, and with a total investment of 259,552.50 Euro, 45% of which (116,798.63 Euro) comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The main objective of the producer organization is to increase the volume of oranges sold outside Portugal by more than 40%.
Based in Vila Nova de Cacela (Vila Real de Santo António), Frusoal began its activity in 1990. It currently has 100 members and produces more than 35,000 tons of citrus fruits (oranges, mandarins, clementines and lemons) in approximately 1,400 hectares located mostly in the Algarve region. With a turnover of more than 22.5 million Euro in 2018, the organization has also invested in the production of kakis and avocados in recent years.
