Downward trend of Spanish tomato exports over the last 8 campaigns

According to data from the Estacom statistical service (Icex-Tax Agency), using TARIC codes (Tariff Integrated of the European Communities), the volume of Spanish tomato exports has been falling for eight consecutive campaigns. However, Moroccan tomato exports have experienced steady growth every year, according to data from COMTRADE, the UN statistical service.

In 2018, the biggest clients for Moroccan tomatoes were France, with 367.52 million kilos; Russia, with 77.23 million kilos, and Spain, with 36.87 million kilos.

In the 2011/2012 campaign, the volume of tomatoes exported by Spain stood at 989.5 million kilos, a figure that has continued to fall with each season, down to the 785.56 million kilos that have been exported in the 2018/2019 campaign. In the case of Morocco, its tomato exports have increased from 443.81 million kilos in 2012 to 568.51 million kilos in 2018.

In the Spanish horticultural campaign 2018/2019 (from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019), the 785.56 million kilos of tomatoes exported generated 932.97 million Euro, with an average price of € 1.188 / kg.

Countries
This campaign, the three largest importers of Spanish tomatoes have bought more than half of the tomatoes shipped by Spanish exporters overseas. Together, Germany, France and the United Kingdom accounted for 51.88% of the total volume of tomatoes exported by Spain.

Last year, the ranking of largest Spanish tomato buyers was topped by Germany, which bought 181.8 million kilos worth 246.03 million Euro.

Germany has also been the country that paid the highest price among the 5 largest buyers, with 1.353 Euro for every kilo of fresh tomatoes.

The second place in the list of the largest buyers of Spanish tomatoes corresponded to France, with a total of 121.54 million kilos worth 131.8 million Euro and an average price of € 1.084 / kg.

The third place is for the United Kingdom, which bought 104.18 million kilos from Spain worth 117.92 million Euro at an average price of € 1.132 / kg.

The fourth place in the ranking was for the Netherlands, with 95.89 million kilos, 101.44 million Euro and an average price of € 1.058 / kg.

Lastly, in fifth place, we have Poland, with 62.73 million kilos, 66.33 million Euro and an average price of € 1.057 / kg.
