Cold, rainy, autumn weather - not something most people look forward to. But Bram Werkman of Landjuweel potato wholesalers is pleased with it. This company is based in Oosternieland, the Netherlands.
"We must keep consumers interested in potatoes. And with this stew weather, it is working well. In the summer, we always have to deal with a dip in sales. I found this to be very long this year. But since then, the demand on the domestic market has increased nicely," says Bram.
"Mother Nature has surprised us once again. That is, however, the beauty of this industry. For example, last Friday, table potatoes were still being grubbed under good conditions. The products harvested before the most recent rains have hardly any quality issues."
"What the potatoes that were grubbed recently will look like, is anyone's guess. Here and there, some harvesting must still be done too. It does, however, provide a good basis for the market," explains Werkman.
"All in all, we have little to complain about. There is a steady mood in the market. If harvesting went perfectly, it would be a different situation. For these prices, farmers can happily keep farming. Traders and retailers can also earn a little something. After all, you must work together. Potatoes remain an important item for supermarkets. "
"Above all, I am glad we have been able to supply high-quality potatoes this year again. Before the season started, I was concerned. I thought there would be grubbing damage. But it was not so bad," concludes Bram.
