Assomela: apple market update for the 2019/20 season

On November 13th, the Assomela Marketing Committee examined the production situation of the 2019/20 season, in terms of quantity and quality.

Even though the transfer figures are not yet definitive, especially for certain production areas and for late varieties, the comparison with the main producers points out a further decrease in production compared to the 2,194,000 tons expected in August.

This lowering is justified in the first place by the particular climatic conditions of the spring-summer 2019, which strongly influenced the fruits' size, which turned out to be smaller than expected, thus creating some imbalance in the main markets. In addition, it has to be mentioned the damage caused, in some production areas, by the increasingly invasive presence of the Asian bug which has lowered the share of marketable goods that can be placed on the market.

The effect of these factors therefore has a detectable impact on the volume of apples destined for the fresh market, with a share that should not exceed 1.8 million tons - among the lowest quantities of the last decade.

From an organoleptic point of view, the product looks good and is suitable for a good conservation, thus allowing the usual commercial programming.

As of the community framework, the production level is currently confirmed at around 10,500,000 tons., down by over 20% compared to the record of over 13,200,000 tons. of the autumn 2018.

On this basis the market started promisingly in November, especially in terms of volumes, and could support the next upward price revisions even for the smaller sizes, which represent an important share of the marketable product for some varieties.
