Spain dominated the export of eggplants worldwide in 2018, both in terms of volume and value, according to data from the Statistics Division of the United Nations Organization (UN), COMTRADE, with codes of the Tariff Integrated of the European Communities (TARIC).
The volume of eggplants exported in 2018 worldwide amounted to 618.97 million kilos, 155.06 of which were exported by Spain, 140.84 by Iran and 75.29 by Mexico. Spain (25.05%), Iran (22.75%) and Mexico (12.16%) combined exported more than half of the world's eggplants in 2018; specifically, 59.96% of the total volume.
The Netherlands ranks fourth with 56.14 million kilos and is followed by Turkey with 24.96 million kilos.
Spain is also the country that obtained the most revenue from the export of eggplants, with 147.83 million Euro. This is 32.81% of the 449.16 million Euro that the world's total exports were worth.
The Netherlands, with 77.75 million Euro, ranked second. Mexico stood third with 47.44 million Euro, and Iran was in fourth place with 41.8 million Euro. Then we find China, with 20.34 million, and the US, with 19.15 million Euro, in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Of the five largest exporters, the one obtaining the best price for its eggplant exports in 2018 was the Netherlands, with € 1.385 / kg. This is 45.33% more expensive than Spain's, which were sold for € 0.953 / kg and obtained the second best price among the five largest exporters worldwide.
The main customer for Spanish eggplants in 2018 was France, where Spain shipped 47.78 million kilos of eggplant. Next in the ranking we find Germany, with 30.64 million kilos, Italy with 20.22, the United Kingdom with 15.52, and the Netherlands, with 11.18 million kilos.
Iranian exports were mostly intended for Iraq, with 107.05 million kilos, while 10.56 million kilos went to the United Arab Emirates and 9.48 million kilos to Afghanistan.
As for Mexican exports, the US market was almost the only destination, as it absorbed 97.98% of all eggplants exported by Mexico.
