Agricola Campidanese bans glyphosate for artichokes

"Despite the differing opinions and studies on the matter, we decided to no longer use glyphosate on our crops. We will start publicizing our decision with artichokes, which are already on sale all over Italy, and will continue with the other products part of our assortment," explains Salvatore Lotta, director of O.P. Agricola Campidanese.

"Next week, we will launch on the market the new artichoke packaging with the "GLYPHOSATE-FREE" label. Consumers know the herbicide, so we are sure they will appreciate our choice. We want to make people understand just how much L'orto di Eleonora cares about food safety and environmental sustainability."

"From a commercial point of view, artichoke sales are recovering after a negative period. Between mid-October and early-November, in fact, consumption and therefore prices have not been thrilling due to the warm temperatures not only in Sardinia, but all over northern Italy."

"Luckily, quantities are peaking now that temperatures have dropped by 10°C all over the peninsula. Prices are slightly lower than usual - a head is currently sold at 40-50 eurocents depending on the type. We supply chains such as Coop, Conad and Eurospin as well as general markets all over Italy."

"The campaign is still long but, in the meantime, we have compared this year's sales with 2018, when the abnormal weather affected production. Despite the fact that consumption so far has been rather slow, there is an actual increase in the volumes commercialized."
