This year the ginger supply from Peru and Brazil is much larger than last year. The export volume of Chinese ginger declined as a direct result of this development. Fresh ginger from South America had a great summer in the European market, and this had an immediate impact on the sales of Chinese ginger.
Mr. Parson Zhu of Qingdao A-Best International Trading Co., Ltd. recently explained the current conditions in the ginger export market: "Ginger sales slowed down in the first half of this year. We faced competition from many Latin American companies. They are also in the middle of their supply season and they are active in the European market. The production volume of Chinese ginger was relatively small last year, which means that the price was relatively high. The high price made competition with Peruvian and Brazilian ginger difficult for Chinese ginger exporters, because the prices of South American ginger were low in comparison. As a result of this situation, Chinese ginger sales in the European market declined. However, in the last few months these conditions have changed."
"Market demand for Chinese ginger started to grow again in October. The price of Chinese ginger is still quite high, but the European market can afford relatively expensive ginger. The European market is starting to import larger volumes of Chinese ginger again. This is a great development for us. The price is still rising. This is mainly because the overall demand from the international market is large, but also because ginger supply is still limited. Take our farms for example, the production volume declined by 20% in comparison with last year."
A-Best International Trading is located in Weifang, Shandong. The company is specialized in ginger plantation. The company also cooperates with local farmers. "The reason we cooperate with local farmers is the growing demand for ginger. Every year market demand grows, and together with local farmers we work hard to guarantee global demand for Chinese ginger. We currently export preserved ginger from last season. The new ginger harvest will be available for export after the 20th of December. The current export price of ginger is around 1800 USD per ton. This price is still rising."
In addition to ginger, A-Best International Trading also sells onions, garlic, carrots, and taro. "We sold large volumes of onions in Europe last year. However, this year the European production volume of onions recovered to regular levels, so we shifted our attention to the African market. The African market demand for onions is still high."
