The price of Chinese leeks was quite good last year and farmers made a healthy profit. This year, however, the overall surface area devoted to leek plantation significantly increased. Now that leeks are gradually entering the market, the price is starting to fall.
The overall surface area devoted to leek plantation is huge and the annual production volume is enormous. Numerous production areas in north China grow leeks. In addition, the transportation of leeks is somewhat complicated. Most of the times leek is sold locally. The cost of transport is high and the financial loss from damage during transport is significant. Retailers make very little profit on leeks. Furthermore, the market is limited, but the production volume still grows. The price is not likely to make anybody happy this year.
