"Ready-to-eat kiwifruit has big potential in China"

New season, locally grown kiwifruits are currently available in China. The season started with high prices, but prices have declined over recent weeks. In addition, heavy rainfall also affected the harvest in some production areas.

Mr. Zhang Peng of Jinan So Sweet Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. talked about the current market situation. "Compared with last year, production is very large, but production areas have encountered minor problems. For example, during the period when large volumes became available, the continuous heavy rainfall gave the fruit a relatively poor taste. But this did not affect us thanks to our choice of growing the fruit on high slopes of sandy soil, which is good for drainage during the rainy season. Therefore, our fruit tastes good this year, even better than in previous years."

“Prices were high at the beginning of the season but began to fall with the subsequent increases in total supply. In general, the prices of most fruit this year started high and grew lower. If the fruit is harvested too early without having advantages in the product and sales channels, growers are subject to a large market impact and risk of losses. Pricing depends on the variety and size, and whether the fruit is ripe. Comparatively, unripened fruit is now facing greater market competition and enormous pressure. We offer ready-to-eat kiwifruit, which is more advantageous with slightly higher market prices.”

“Although there were already new crops on the market in August and September, we strictly control the ripeness and sugar content when picking our fruit, so our kiwifruit are generally available later than other businesses, usually around the National Day. Our supply period can last through to April or May of the second year.” Mr. Zhang Peng said about the new trends of ready-to-eat kiwifruit, “The demand for ready-to-eat kiwifruit is increasing, and we offer ready-to-eat kiwifruit by using specialized technologies. All the customers who tasted our ready-to-eat kiwifruit ripened with specialized ripening technologies gave positive feedback. At present, most upstream companies mainly offer unripened kiwifruit instead of ready-to-eat products. The market space of ripe ready-to-eat kiwifruit will grow increasingly larger and more recognized In the future Chinese market.”

"Our current varieties mainly include green kiwi such as Cuixiang, Xuxiang, Yate, and Hayward, as well as gold kiwi such as Jinyan. These are varieties with large production, and each has its characteristics. Our kiwifruit are mainly grown by large-scale agricultural cooperatives in main producing areas. The planted acreages are large, ranging from several hundred to thousands of mu, mainly in Zhouzhi County and Mei County of Shaanxi Province, two major kiwifruit production areas. So Sweet is our umbrella brand, while each product corresponds to a sub-brand so as to brand our products independently. Our ready-to-eat kiwifruit is under the brand ‘Miaochi', meaning that ‘you don’t have to wait for good kiwifruit to ripen. You can enjoy it right after you buy it.’”

“All of our products are offered through diverse sales channels, including online e-commerce channels, offline fruit retail chains, boutique supermarkets, community group purchases, as well as wholesale markets.

Currently, boutique fruit stores, supermarket chains, and wholesale markets are our biggest sales channels. We have various ranges, mainly for medium and high-end channels, but many fruits are facing fierce competition in first-tier cities, while the sales performance is better in the second- and third-tier cities, so the supply volume of our products to second- and third-tier cities is currently larger. In the future, we will channel more energy into promoting our products in second- and third-tier cities while meeting demand from high-end channels in first-tier cities.”
