The agricultural cooperative Association of Small Organic Agricultural Producers San Rafael (ASPRAOSRA), located in the district of Buenos Aires in the province of Morropon (Piura), exports five containers of bananas to the European market each week thanks to a business plan co-financed by the Competitiveness Compensation Program (Agroideas) of the Peruvian Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri). The bananas are destined for European countries such as Germany and Belgium.
ASPRAOSRA has 256 hectares of land and 182 members, who received S/ 700,000 for the construction of a packing plant, i.e. 70% of the investment needed.
This fund financed the necessary infrastructure and technology required by the export market, such as the installation of a banana baler and a 4.8 km cable for the transfer of fruit. The plan also contemplated the provision of fertilizers and technical assistance, among other aspects.
According to the manager of ASPRAOSRA, Alex Rijalba Arevalo, producers have benefited from the growth of the cooperative and the local migration rate has decreased.
