South Africa’s apple and pear brand, Tru-Cape Fruit, is further investing in promoting apples and pears through its sponsorship of a television cooking programme while, at the same time, asking food writers to contribute easy and delicious recipes.
Jenny Kay, previously Angela Day in the Star newspaper, was recently commissioned to develop new apple and pear recipes which Tru-Cape shared on their social-media platforms as well as in the media at large. The Giggling Gourmet, Jenny Morris showcased Tru-Cape fruit in her Yumscious Restaurant and on the radio too.
And, since September this year, Tru-Cape has sponsored a team on an Afrikaans-language cooking school programme, Skole Kook. While this is the third year that the reality-TV programme Skole Kook is aired, 2019 is the first time that Tru-Cape has sponsored it.
Tru-Cape marketing director Conrad Fick explains: “As the largest exporter of South African apples and pears, we know that South Africans, and the globe at large, love our fruit but we also know that most of our fruit is enjoyed fresh and we want to expand the use of apples and pears into cooked dishes too. Twenty-two schools across the country are participating in looking for cooking talent in our schools and the next generation of great cooks and chefs. The winners will get a scholarship to the acclaimed ICA chef’s school as well as other sponsored prizes.” Fick explains.
In each episode, the first of which was broadcast on Monday, September 16, 2019 at 18:00 on VIA on DSTV channel 147 and then aired again every Monday there will be two teams of two who will cook off against each other. As the main sponsor, Tru-Cape will have a branded Tru-Cape team wearing company colours and cooking with apples and pears. The top five schools will go through to the semi-finals and the judges will choose one “wildcard” and one extra school from the rest for the semi-final too. Seven teams compete in the semi-final. The top three schools go into the final where an overall winner will be chosen. The final will be on aired on December 9, 2019. Hetta Saunderson of M4 Events is coordinating the sponsorship as well as the production.
