Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti strengthens its position in Spain

CIV varieties are increasingly appreciated in Spain. "When it comes to apples, we are starting new collaborations with the leading Catalan nurseries holding propagation rights for CIV varieties all over the Iberian peninsula," explains Marco Bertolazzi from Consorzio Italiano Vivaisti."

As for strawberries, "we will set up a varietal selection facility in Huelva, the leading strawberry producer area in Spain, in order to assess the CIV materials needing few chill hours directly in this territory. In this case too, we are collaborating with a local nursery. We are also strengthening the assessment of our advanced selections with local producers and marketing businesses."

Varieties part of the Sweet Resistants® family (Gaia, Gemini, Fujion, Smeralda), club apples Civg198/Modi®, the new Gala clone part of the "full red" variety commercialized under the T-Rex brand and new Fuji clones including FUCIV51 SANCIV® as well as numerous strawberry varieties suitable to different environments are worth a mention.

Floricane varieties include Clerypbr and the new CIVNB557 LYCIA®; plus there are Flavia, Flaminia and CIVS906 ELIDE® from the south. Murano continues to be a reference when it comes to remontant varieties suitable for cool and/or cold weather, then there is Majestic (already popular in northern Europe) and the brand new CIVRH612 ANIA®, with its wild strawberry aroma, and CIVRH621 CANTUS® resistant to handling.

CIVRL333 XANTE® is CIV's first remontant variety needing few chill hours and therefore suitable for hot dry weather. The new CIV  genetics is suitable for traditional filed and/or modern soilless/greenhouse techniques that combine excellent natural resistance with organoleptic qualities in line with the demands of the global market.

Bertolazzi also talked about the collaboration with the University of Bologna for the genetic improvement of pear trees. "CIV and UNIBO are busy promoting various types of pears (early, two-colored and red-colored: PE1UNIBO /Lucy Sweet®, PE2UNIBO/Early Giulia®, PE4UNIBO/ Lucy Red®) that will be presented at the next edition of FUTURPERA 2019 (Ferrara, 28th-30th November).

CIV believes in involving international retailers and service providers. Dario Lezziero (Modì project manager and export in the commercialization of branded fruit) commented that "those at the end of the chain such as big retailers and those at the beginning like ourselves need to collaborate with as many actors as possible to set up varietal projects capable of creating added value for all actors, final consumers included. Few projects were needed to reach an objective once, while now more are needed to meet a demand that is increasingly varied and made up of consumers who are more and more evolved, aware and demanding."
