Market Report Austria CW 45/2019:

"Quiet potato sales, unchanged producer prices for onions"

The situation on the Austrian potato market is calm and balanced. The warehouses of the traders are reasonably well stocked, although potatoes continue to be supplied by the farmers. In view of the lack of medium-term price perspectives, many farmers prefer to part with their goods sooner rather than later. The domestic business meanwhile is rather quiet and unspectacular, which is normal for the month of November. Consumer households are usually well stocked with promotional items.

In the coming weeks, however, sales should pick up again - exports are still barely made. Although inquiries from Southeastern and Eastern Europe are coming in steadily, graduations are still failing in price. Producer prices have not changed this week. In Lower Austria a price range of €22 / 100kg to €28 / 100kg was mentioned at the beginning of the week. From Upper Austria also unchanged prices of up to €28 / 100kg were reported.

Onion market without impulses
No serious changes to the Austrian onion market. A sufficiently good supply is in contrast to a still calm domestic demand. The hoped-for sales momentum on the domestic market is still coming. Exports can be made on a manageable scale on an ongoing basis. In terms of price, however, there are still strict limits in Eastern Europe. With the producer prices there is no change to the previous week. For onion, cleaned and sorted in the box are usually paid with appropriate quality and size between €23 and 28 / 100 kg.

Carrot harvest up and running
The Lower Austrian carrot market continues to be dominated by stocked goods. Harvesting is underway, even if the harvesting temperatures are still too high. The harvest is likely to be average, but this year, higher readout losses due to mice are to be expected. Domestic demand is typically quiet in November. Producer prices have seen no changes compared to last week.
