Lemon and avocado groves escape from California’s Maria fire

This past Friday, the Maria fire hit Santa Paula, home to Limoneira’s headquarters and the company’s thousands of acres of lemons and avocados. “The fire was on the south side of the river and fortunately, it stayed there,” says John Chamberlain with Limoneira. “Although largely dry, the riverbed is pretty wide, and the fire didn’t cross the river. Our ranches are on the north side of the river and were not impacted.”

The Maria fire went towards an area that was impacted by the Thomas Fire two years ago. “This is where it ran out of fuel.”

Fluid situation
The Maria fire is still burning, but fortunately temperatures came down over the weekend and the winds died down. Although there is still a concern, the immediate danger has been reduced. “You just never know, it’s kind of a fluid situation,” Chamberlain shared. “Unfortunately, this seems to be the new reality in California.”
