“High demand for Belgian tomatoes due to limited Spanish and Moroccan supply”

The Belgian greenhouse vegetable season is currently nearing its end. The last volumes of bell peppers are making their way out the door at the moment. The last of the cucumbers and aubergines will follow in a week or two.

“We have had an excellent greenhouse vegetable season," says Barry Michiels of the Belgian company, Gebroeders Michiels. “The weather was perfect for summer vegetable sales. We also had ups and downs in the supply thanks to the hot periods. This fluctuating supply and the high demand made for good prices."

“The tomato season also ran consistently well. There was a very good demand for both loose tomatoes and TOV. This demand is still great. There is currently very little supply from Spain and Morocco. As a result, the market keeps asking for Dutch and Belgian tomatoes," says Barry.

This exporter has noticed the demand for lit tomatoes grow every year. Here, however, the price still plays a major role. "Our clients often do choose price over quality. Especially when the Spanish or Moroccan tomatoes are priced slightly lower."

“The summer vegetable season is over now. The demand for typical winter vegetables is, therefore, on the rise again. These types of vegetables are Brussels Sprouts, leeks, and lamb's lettuce," continues Michiels.

"Brussels Sprouts are doing very well in Germany again. The Belgian crossed Brussels Sprouts are certainly very popular in the German gastronomical world. The multi-colored lettuce is also selling well. But we supply German warehouses with these year-round."

Gebroeders Michiels' clients are mostly in Southern Germany. "Frankfurt, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Neurenberg are good sales areas for us. Our trucks go to German wholesale markets seven days a week. They do so so they can deliver fresh products every day," Barry concludes.
