"We organized this Open Day - explained the breeder Roberto Gregori - to observe the new winter selections of apple trees. We performed the cuts at different times, in order to evaluate the Brix levels, the preservability and the color. We also brought samples from different production areas”.

Producers are constantly seeking for resistant varieties in order to reduce treatments and costs. These genetic characteristics from the University of Bologna are resistant to scab and grey aphid attacks. And, on average, they are all very sweet.

Tasting tests were carried out on-site. One of those that met with the highest approval index was the selection BO B47G086, a hybrid of Royal Gala and Florina. Harvesting time is similar to that of the Golden Delicious, the plant has medium sturdiness, standard posture and a high production.

We performed three cuts for this selection," said Gregori, "by measuring the main parameters. The cuts were done on 16 and 26 September, and 8 October. The °Brix level was respectively 13.3 (hardness 9.2 kg), 14.6 (hardness 8.94 kg), and 15 °Brix (8.56 kg hardness)".

For its high °Brix, the BO B48C251 selection is particularly interesting. At the time of harvest it was already at 18 and it reaches approximately 22 at the end of storage. It's a hybrid of Renetta Grigia di Torriana and GoldRush. It is harvested 2-3 weeks after Golden Delicious. The plant is moderately resistant to scab, but the epidermis characteristics of the fruit ensures immunity. It is not only interesting for its taste, but also for its preservability.
