The international price of Honduran melons and watermelons has increased by 45.8%, according to the Central Bank of Honduras (BCH). Exports of agricultural products between January and July 2019 totaled $523.5 million dollars, i.e. 9.4 million more than in the same period of 2018. Melon and watermelon exports generated $111.1 million dollars, i.e. 39.0 million more than in the same period of last year, given the increase in the international average price and the 5.7% increase in export volume. Their main destination markets were the United States and the Netherlands.
Exports of legumes and vegetables, most of which were exported to the United States, grew by 7.5 million dollars in that period, registering a value of 69.7 million.
Despite the 3.6% increase in export volume, banana exports up until the seventh month of 2019 decreased by 34.4 million dollars when compared to the same period of last year, totaling 279.2 million dollars. This decrease was due to the 14.1% drop in their international average price (equivalent to $2.55 less per box of 40 pounds).
