"Quality and volume of Chinese pears better than last year"

The Chinese pear industry has changed a lot in comparison with last year. The overall production volume is not bad and the early-season pear varieties have been on the market for some time. This is the period when late-season pears enter the market in large volumes.

Mr. Han, a trader from Wenshui County in Lvliang City, Shanxi Province, explained the situation as follows: "The harvest season of fresh pears began on 1 October, similar to previous years. Last year, the pear orchards suffered from extreme weather conditions and the product quality was less than ideal. This year the conditions are very different. The production volume and the product quality both improved in comparison with last year. The size and flavor of the pears is quite good. Furthermore, our pears can be stored for a long time as they can stay in refrigerated storage for 1 year."

"The pear production volume was relatively small last year because the orchards suffered from cold currents. This year the production volume is quite impressive with nearly 5 million kg of pears.

Our pear orchard is located in Wenshui County, Lvliang City, Shanxi Province. The main variety we produce is the crunchy Su pear. We are in the initial stage of the harvest period. The price is slightly higher than around this time last year. However, there is a limit to the price rise.  We already stored the top-quality pears in refrigerated storage. The price is around 1-1.6 yuan [0.14-0.23 USD] per 0.5 kg. The price differences are mainly due to inequalities in product quality."

Mr. Han mainly focuses on offline sales channels. He sells pears in wholesale markets in Beijing and Shanghai. "We focus on the plantation of fruit trees. Wenshui County has around 400-470 hectare of pear trees. The average production volume is around 2,500 kg per 0.07 hectare. We hope to expand to overseas markets because the Chinese market for pears is saturated. We deliver top-quality fruit and genuine service. We welcome overseas buyers to contact us to discuss business opportunities."
