The reason why table grapes are not doing well on the market is still unknown to producers and traders. Yet one thing is clear: the extra quality produce is the only profitable one at the moment.
"We are currently working with the Italia, Red Globe and Black Pearl varieties at the moment. Despite the excellent quality, sales of the standard produce remain slow and quantities are rather abundant," explains Lorenzo Bellassai from Giovanni Bellassai Srl, a company located in Mazzarrone (CT).
"But we cannot complain when it comes to the extra quality, as prices are good. The only problem is volumes are limited."

Special offers by many domestic retail chains and the fierce competition by Greece and Turkey are not helping. What is more, the first produce from Brazil and Peru will become available soon.
"We are currently exporting our seeded grapes in France and we are also working with markets in Italy, though things are slow."
On a domestic level, Giovanni Bellassai has become the official supplier of MD Italia. "Our extra-quality grapes are available in stores. We have also noticed that, in Sicily, consumers are more aware when it comes to quality and origin."
"I would like consumers to understand just how much it takes to grow each single bunch of grapes. Considering how things are going now, our produce will be available until at least mid-December if the weather remains favorable."
