Wimco Groenendaal, Groda AGF:

"Stable Dutch top fruit market, but growers must be prepared to keep selling"

Apple picking season is fast nearing its end. "We have had good volumes, especially in the center of the country," says Wimco Groenendaal of Groda AGF. This company is based in Est, the Netherlands. "The last harvest of apples did not color all the way through. However, their overall quality is considerably better than last year."

He says apple prices are typical for this time of year. "They are not moving faster than usual. But you can also not call it quiet. All the sales countries are buying a bit. There are, however, no outliers. Germany is taking a stable volume. The UK, too, despite the approaching Brexit deadline. Scandinavia means slightly more to the apple market than in other years."

According to Wimco, the pear demand is not overwhelming, just stable. "Here too, the quality, especially the inner quality, is much better than last year. That is reflected in the stable sales. Although retail prices are lagging a little."

"In previous years, the prices dipped sharply after the premier products were sold out. That was not the case this year. What is, however, essential is that growers must keep selling. Then the market will not stagnate. We must keep it in motion," Wimco concludes.
