Kees Havenaar, Frutas Luna:

"People in Spain are more concerned about low prices of greenhouse veggies than Brexit"

The sale of Spanish greenhouse vegetables is not doing well according to Kees Havenaar of Frutas Luna. "The prices are very poor, both from eggplant and peppers, as well as from cucumbers and courgettes." The tomatoes are currently a positive exception, as are the leafy vegetables, which we are currently lacking."

"The weather is still good in Spain. The night temperatures have dropped a bit, so that is good for the plants. With the Fruit Attraction in Madrid next week, trade will not get much better either. According to experts, the kick start should be around 1 November. We will see." says Kees, who has been living and working in Spain for several decades and started the Spanish company Frutas Luna with Niek Haerkens and Marco de Keijzer of Marni Fruit more than eleven years ago.

"At the fair, Brexit will certainly be the topic of conversation, I suspect. But to be honest, I do not hear anyone in Spain talk about it. If it does happen we'll survive it too. Transport to the UK will be the biggest problem especially when we have to cross the border from Spain via France. Compared to a trip to the Netherlands they are two days longer on the road - with the risk that an illegal person will get into your load - so fewer and fewer carriers want to go to the UK," Kees concludes.
