"Mango Market recovering from huge supply of Brazilian produce"

The mango market had changed completely in recent weeks compared to the end of August. From no mangoes, to a few that were available in August, and then to a huge supply of Brazilian Keith mangoes. “Brazil has sent more mangoes than usual this year. Especially in the big sizes 6 and 7 there was an oversupply which led to very low prices, "says Joep Jongmans of Special Fruit. “In addition, Keith is also a sensitive mango that needs to be moved quickly. This has also contributed to the low prices."

 Keith mangoes from Brazil

“The huge supply of Brazilian mangoes (varieties: Keith, Palmer and Tommy Atkins) is partly the result of lower exports to the United States. In addition to the Brazilian mango, the Israeli mangoes were three weeks longer on the market due to a late season. And last but not least the Spanish Osteen mangoes arrived on the market, as a result of which the volumes were too large to be processed properly," says Joep. "Because of the low prices, the supermarkets have been able to do more promotions, increasing consumption."

“Fortunately, the market is now slowly changing. We have received the first signs that the large supply of Keith mangoes is done and Brazil is switching to Kent. The size of the Kent mangoes is more medium size (8 and 9), which are popular with most supermarkets. Although the price is still much lower than last year, we are seeing that the market is recovering slowly. However, we are heading in the right direction again," Joep concludes.
