Marcel Verdellen, Satori Holland:

"Hardly any supply and high prices for limes after two lean years"

"It has not been easy in the lime market for the past two years. As a result, many people do not want to get their fingers burnt," notes Marcel Verdellen of Satori Holland.

"At the moment there is hardly any supply on the market. Prices are between 9 and 10 euros, so if you have limes, you are currently have the upper hand. But after two dramatic years we also need that."

"The Mexicans are now slowly getting going. For a long time they have been able to make good prices in the United States, so there was less volumes available for the European market. Brazil is at the end of the season and is get good prices on the national market. Product, both from Mexico and Brazil does not retain the quality," says Marcel. "But September is always a calm market for limes. The market will stabilise again in the coming weeks."

"Hopefully the market demand remains good, but more is needed for a structural revival of the market. This product group has simply been poorly valued over the last two years," said Marcel. According to him, a solution is within reach if people stop trading commission from limes. "When the same people who buy the limes sell the limes, you get a very different spectrum."
