The greenhouse vegetable season is slowly approaching its end, writes Frits van der Meulen in his KCB column. In the supermarkets, the majority of products still on the shelves are Dutch. It would be nice to end this season with quality products from our own soil!
Quality greenhouse products
The quality of the pepper is still excellent. The colour remains good and we also see few qualitative problems in the trade. Peppers are already coming in from Spain, but the quality that we see here is very disappointing.
The tomato season is actually running for much longer. More and more often we find Dutch tomatoes on the market throughout the year. The quality is excellent here and there are few rejections. The aubergines are of good quality all year round. We also see excellent Spanish aubergines appearing on the market, usually all wrapped in plastic.
With cucumbers, the crops are heading towards their end and the quality varies. In addition to good parties, we also come across cucumbers that are of poor quality in terms of shape, colour and peel damage. As a result, these products are difficult to sell once in store.
Last harvest weeks for iceberg lettuce
The iceberg lettuce is entering its last harvest weeks and with all the rain that has fallen and the low temperatures, it is difficult to keep the quality at a high level. The bulbs are no longer fixed and therefore we see more damage.
