In view of rising prices of tomatoes, which have crossed ₹60 per kg (€0.77) in some parts of the country, including Delhi, consumer affairs secretary A.K. Srivastava on Friday chaired an inter-ministerial meeting to augment supplies.
The government's move comes after it banned exports of onions and put stock limits on traders to bring down rising prices of the essential kitchen ingredient. The representatives of Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare informed that the general supply has been hit due to incessant rains in Maharashtra and Karnataka and it will normalize in the next 10 days as monsoon rains are already receding.
To mitigate the shortfall in availability of tomatoes in Delhi, Safal has agreed to provide Tomato puree from all its outlets in Delhi at ₹25 per 200 gram pack which is equivalent to about 800 grams of tomatoes.
