During the inspection of a number of vehicles from North Africa that had disembarked from the Duba Bridge ship in Almeria, the Guardia Civil had to assist a person on Monday, October 7, who had been traveling hidden in the back of a van covered with a great amount of vegetables.
Following the suspicion that a van could be transporting undeclared cargo, an agent carried out an inspection of the cargo compartment, finding a person hidden among the vegetables with obvious symptoms of exhaustion and dehydration.
After the person received medical treatment, the driver of the vehicle was arrested for a crime against the rights of foreign citizens.
So far this year, the agents of the Guardia Civil of Almeria have helped 108 people hidden in luggage or inside vehicles, or who have thrown themselves in the water during the docking maneuvers of vessels from North Africa.
The task of detecting and aiding stowaways is carried out by the agents of the Guardia Civil of Almeria all year round.
Special protection is given to unaccompanied minors (MENA), who put their lives at risk by hiding under trucks, in wheel arches or even in the engines of vehicles. They are detected by agents of the Guardia Civil with the help of dogs, and then provided assistance. So far this year, five minors have been assisted by Guardia Civil agents.
