Henk Vlaeminck, Van Dijk Food Belgium

"It's hard to find good quality grapes this year"

“We have a somewhat difficult grape market this year. At the moment we have almost all varieties, but it is not easy to find good quality grapes," says Henk Vlaeminck of Van Dijk Foods Belgium. "The quality of seedless varieties is generally okay, but the grapes from Sicily have quite a few quality problems this year."

“The demand for grapes is good to very good this year. Thick grapes sell very well, but the demand for seedless has also increased again this year. The demand for regular grapes with seed is somewhat disappointing, "says Henk. “Due to the good demand, the prices of the seedless grapes are around 3 euros per kilo. The good quality grapes with seeds are around 2.20 and 2.40 Euro per kilo. "

Citrus
In addition to the grape season, the citrus season is also starting again. “The leaf clementines are starting to run full swing. The demand is increasing and we cannot complain about the quality. We hear that there are some quality issues on the market here and there, but the product we have is beautiful in colour, good in taste and nicely juicy,” continues Vlaeminck.

“Normally the first citrus varieties are a lot less qualitative, but we started two weeks later and are very satisfied with the product. We expect the oranges a little later this year, we've been told the end of October. But the pressing oranges are also expected later, mid to late November. The persimmons season is also starting. Demand and supply are slowly picking up again," Henk concludes.
