Peak of Brazilian mango shipments to US approaching

Mangoes from Brazil, Ecuador and Mexico are steadily streaming into the United States as supplies remain steady for now. There is very little volume left from Mexico, with only a handful of markets carrying the fruit. The majority of supply is now coming from both Brazil and Ecuador, with Brazil primarily supplying the East Coast, and Ecuador filling warehouses on the West Coast.

"Our Mexico season just finished so now are focusing on Brazilian and Ecuadorian mangoes," shared Gary Clevenger of Freska Produce. "At the moment, all of the Brazilian supply is made up of Tommy Atkins, while most of the volume at this front end of the Ecuadorian season is Ataulfo, with Tommy Atkins to follow soon. The Brazil season will peak late October while Ecuador will peak in November."

Market is strong
Current volume indicates that demand is on the cusp of exceeding supply. The market is strong as suppliers wait for heavier volumes. The exception is the remainder of Mexican fruit in the system, where shippers are now clearing out their inventory.

"The market is quite strong right now," Clevenger observed. "This is especially so on the Brazilian and Ecuadorian fruit. The last of the inventories from Mexico will finish up by the end of this week. Overall supplies are okay, but they are not overwhelming. We will see the peak of the Brazil season over the next few weeks."

He added that although the bulk of mangoes from Brazil will remain on the East Coast, some supply will make its way west. "We are still waiting on more volume of Tommy Atkins from Ecuador, so the West Coast will also see some Brazilian fruit over the coming weeks."

Focus at PMA Fresh Summit
Freska Produce will again be exhibiting at the PMA Fresh Summit in Anaheim this month. The company introduced a dried mango line last year and will look to continue highlighting that at this year's PMA. Visitors will also have the opportunity to discuss the company's fresh fruit programs as well.

"Last year we introduced our dried mango program," Clevenger said. "We will once again be showcasing this lineup at this year's PMA Fresh Summit. We will also be highlighting our fresh mango and avocado programs as well."

Visitors to PMA Fresh Summit will find Freska Produce at Booth #2091.
