Willem Vogelaar (Van Oers United) on start of Morocco season:

"With own growing locations in the Netherlands, Morocco, Senegal and Ethiopia, there is a back up location for every period"

The Moroccan green bean season has now started at Van Oers United. "The crops are looking very good. The Dutch season is coming to an end as a result of the heavy rainfall in recent days and the supply of imported products from Morocco is just at the right time," says Willem Vogelaar. In addition to green beans from northern and southern Morocco, Van Oers United also received green beans from France this week.

"Despite many years of experience, doing business in Africa remains challenging," says Willem. "We will remember the start of 2019 for a long time. The availability of green beans was not stable in the first quarter, partly due to weather conditions and various logistical strikes. Van Oers United has therefore taken various steps in recent months to ensure even better availability for the coming season. "

“Our customers want a fresh box of top quality beans every day, which is presented beautifully and naturally meets the expectations of the consumer, so tastes good and is stringless. We at Van Oers United are able to offer green beans of consistent quality all year round through a well-thought out sourcing strategy and therefore constantly shift the emphasis from one country of origin to another. "

The basis for year-round supply of green beans, among others, is their own cultivation in both Africa and the Netherlands. In addition, they supply products from partners in France, Africa and South America, where they grow everywhere in accordance with the Van Oers standards. “Thanks to our own cultivation locations in the Netherlands, Morocco, Senegal and Ethiopia and controlled partner production in South America and Africa, Van Oers United manages the entire chain from seed to the customer. For example, we have a back-up location in every period in the event of disruptions in cultivation or supply," says Willem Vogelaar.

Hand in hand with cultivation are issues such as sustainable cultivation, food safety and corporate social responsibility, which play an important role in Van Oers United's business model. “The demands from retail and consumers are becoming increasingly higher in terms of food safety and sustainability. As Van Oers United, we are convinced that we are at the forefront of this, certainly in terms of cultivation in Africa. ”

In addition to the green beans, the Moroccan string bean season has also started - the crops are in good shape and the quality is very good. The harvest of spring onions has already begun and corn will follow within a few weeks. Van Oers United started last year with commercial programs organic green beans, spring onions and Brussels sprouts. The first organic green beans from Morocco are expected this week, followed by organic spring onions in week 46.
