Spanish persimmons are heading for record volumes this season. "The recent floods of hurricane Dana seemed to throw a spanner in the forecast, but now that we are taking stock after a few weeks, the persimmon harvest does not seem to have been heavily affected, and so the volume expectations remains unchanged," says Paul van Groningen of Green Food Iberica.
They handle the purchasing of the Spanish range for their Scandinavian parent organization and also purchase fruit and vegetables throughout Spain for other buyers in North-West Europe.
The Spanish persimmon harvest is expected to reach around 650,000 tons. Considerably more than the 300,000 tons in 2018 as a result of frost and hail damage and the 275,000-tonne harvest in 2017.
"We expect high-quality persimmons with a fair appearance and a medium-sized grading for this season. Temperatures in Valencia meant the persimmons did not ripen as desired, but if the nights get colder in October, that is expected to help promote the colouring," says Paul.
Since May this year, Green Food Iberica has stationed a colleague among the citrus and persimmons in Valencia. "This gives us optimal control over the chain, which is important to have a continuous supply of high-quality and sustainable growth," says Paul.
