"Honeydew melon market in China heating up"

The Honeydew melon is one of the best-selling fruit categories in the market at the moment. In China, the total acreage dedicated to this fruit is huge, mainly concentrated in Yunnan, Guangxi, Guangdong, and Xinjiang. The season in Xinjiang is currently in full swing and is expected to last until the end of October.

“Honeydew melons from Xinjiang have performed satisfactorily this season, although the overall quality may be slightly lower than last year due to strong winds. In addition, production has increased, mainly due to denser planting, a sufficient application of compost, and timely management of the fields. The market situation this season started mediocre at the beginning but is now heating up. The current price is about 2 yuan per 500 grams, which is good for this time of the year,” Ms. Liu, a grower from Xinjiang said.

According to Ms. Liu, the demand for honeydew melons in the local Chinese market is very strong. They are sold in many markets thanks to their unique taste and enjoy very large demand from consumers. Ms. Liu further explained that compared with other varieties, the sales of “Xizhou Honey 25” are more substantial.

“'Xizhou Mi 25’, a new variety that spends long hours in the sun, has green thin skin and crispy, juicy flesh. The sugar content is higher and the size is smaller. Traditional honeydew melons are 3.5-4 kilos each but this variety is only about 1.5 kilos each; even the bigger ones are only about 2.5 kilos, so they are more convenient for consumers to enjoy. 'Xizhou Honey 25' grows in Xinjiang with plenty of sunshine and large temperature differences between day and night. The climate conditions there provide a natural advantage for their growth."

"With the improvement of living standards in China, the demand for 'Xizhou Honey 25' is also growing, and the planted area has been expanding. These have all made the market more competitive."
