New Zealand onion exporter looking to take advantage of growing global demand

A leading New Zealand export marketing company says demand for the country's onions is increasing globally, particularly in Asia.

Integrow supplies mainly onions and apples, with each making up about 50 per cent of total sales. Managing Director Philip Bird says 2019 was a record year for the company, and New Zealand has 1-2 new markets opening up for 2020.

"The future looks bright and Integrow aims to increase its onion exports in 2020," he said. "Our NZ crops are at very early stage of growth, about 4-5 leaf. So, it's a long time before we can estimate crops. That said, weather has been good so far, with no problems, so we expect crops to be good quality, with a good range of sizes for all markets. We are very busy January to September with export sales."

The company also exports some carrots, pumpkin, citrus and avocados, and recently showcased its produce and services at Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong

"Numbers were clearly down, but we were able to spend valuable time with each customer," Mr Bird said. "This enables good discussions without rushing, unlike previous years, where customers are waiting. We picked up some new business which is nice."

Mr Bird added that Europe is New Zealand's biggest market and he is monitoring the situation with Brexit in the United Kingdom closely, as to if or when they formally leave the European Union.

"As an optimist, if UK is out of the EU, it could lead more opportunities for NZ onions, as UK Government looks to secure supply via free trade agreement with NZ," he said. "But generally, we look forward to supplying good volumes again of our safe NZ onions to Europe, but also Asia is increasing its buying power every year, so we have a nice balance developing."

It comes as he says demand for New Zealand onions are generally increasing around the world, and Asia in particular is showing some “nice growth”.

"NZ produces Class 1 onions, where the skins are very attractive and clean, and generally considered top quality for retail programs," Mr Bird said. "Plus, we supply a safe onion with excellent traceability, giving buyers confidence."

Looking to build on export opportunities, Integrow will be in Madrid for Fruit Attraction (22-24th October) where Mr Bird says he is looking forward to meeting both existing customers and taking any new enquiries.
