Data from the customs office shows that China exported more than 231,900 tons of potatoes in the period from January until July, 2019. That is a decline of 7.2% in comparison with the same period last year. Between January and July China also imported 76,500 tons of potatoes, which is a decline of 35.2% in comparison with the same period last year. September is the autumn harvest season.
There are two characteristics of the potato market in autumn: first, potatoes enter the market from many different production areas, such as Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Ningxia in the north, as well as Sichuan and Guizhou in the southwest. Second, potatoes enter the market in large volumes at the same time. Autumn potatoes enter the market between September and the middle of October. The market is flooded with large volumes of potatoes during a brief period. The price is likely to drop.
