Francisco Sánchez, manager of Onubafruit:

"This will be a campaign with a great kaki production in Spain"

Just like the Region of Valencia, the province of Huelva also expects a full kaki production. The Rojo Brillante campaign will start in mid-October for Onubafruit, which estimates a production of around 10,000 tons, and will come to an end in December.

“This will be a campaign with a great kaki production in Spain compared to the previous year. The weather has not had a negative impact on the yields and the fruit's quality is good. Fortunately, Huelva's kaki productions tend to stay at around the same levels, unlike in Valencia, where there are great variations in terms of volume and quality every year. Here we are harvesting the kakis on their usual dates.”

The company mainly produces and markets Rojo Brillante kakis, although they also have other Sharon-like early varieties that Francisco Sánchez describes as "very interesting." Its main markets are in Europe, but the firm is also increasingly expanding in Asia, where it has already been growing for several years. “We want our kakis to reach China soon, as this is a market with much potential for the product; however, we are lacking the help of the Ministry of Agriculture to speed up the setting up of an export protocol. There are talks about the possibility of opening other Asian markets, such as India, but its purchasing power and infrastructure cannot be compared to China's.”
