In previous years, traders could be seen busily purchasing apples for the National Day in production areas, but this year, the scenes of traders competing with each other in purchasing and shipping are missing in the production areas in Shaanxi, Shandong and Gansu provinces. This is mainly due to the fact that the recent heavy rains in Western China have had a great impact on the current apple market.
Take Shaanxi as an example. Many plots there have seen significant instances of Fujis turning back to green after bagging has been removed, so prices are lower and red-colored supplies are difficult to find.
Trading prices of Red Generals and early Fujis continued to remain weak with further declines. Especially in Qixia, a production area in Yantai, large volumes of fruit have turned back to green, and a lot of partly green fruit are being seen, while the overall price has dropped by about 1.00 yuan compared with Gala. However, the drop in better-colored apples is small.
Due to volatile prices this year, traders are wary of purchasing from the growers, while growers have been eagerly waiting for traders to purchase from them. Both are unable to understand current market conditions and are keeping a wait-and-see attitude. This is bad news for the late crops becoming available soon.
