As confirmed by the Melon and Watermelon Horticultural Lonja of Castile-La Mancha, in recent days, the price of Piel de Sapo melons from La Mancha, which are already running out, continues to rise. At the moment, they can be purchased for between 0.40 and 0.47 Euro per kilo, which is more than double than what was paid at the beginning of the campaign.
It also reports that the price of first class melons has oscillated between 0.30 and 0.37 Euro per kilo, while the second class has cost between 0.13 and 0.20 Euro per kilo.
At the moment, the melons still on the shelves are those that were planted in the third phase, in early July. The president of the interprofessional, Cristóbal Jiménez, confirmed that the majority of producers in La Mancha split the campaign in three phases, which allows the campaign to last for longer than two months while preventing price imbalances.
Watermelon prices remain stable
The situation is different for watermelons, whose prices have remained fairly stable throughout the campaign. This past week, first class seedless black watermelons have been sold for 0.22 to 0.25 Euro per kilo, and the second class for 0.12 to 0.15 Euro per kilo. Meanwhile, the first class white watermelon has been marketed for between 0.22 and 0.25 Euro per kilo, and the second class has oscillated between 0.13 and 0.15 Euro per kilo.
The last meeting of the Lonja will be held on October 2
The president of the Melon and Watermelon Interprofessional has confirmed that the Fruit and Vegetable Lonja will hold the last meeting of the campaign next Wednesday, October 2, a few days earlier than last year. By then, there will be very little Piel de Sapo melon in the markets. The campaign started at the end of July.
Castile-La Mancha is one of the four largest melon and watermelon producers nationwide. In 2018, the acreage has stood slightly below the 6,000 hectares of melons declared in the CAP in 2018, and above the 2,400 of watermelons. 80% of the crops are located in the municipalities of Cinco Casas, Manzanares, Membrilla, Tomelloso and Argamasilla de Alba.
