Yigit Gokyigit on the Turkish pomegranate season

“We have more than enough large sizes available for pomegranates”

Multiple countries are having issues with the sizes of their pomegranates, but for one Turkish exporter this is not a problem. Next to having all sizes available, there is more than enough volume to meet the ever-rising demand.

The Turks expect a great pomegranate season ahead of them, says Yigit Gokyigit, the sales and marketing coordinator for Alanar. “Our pomegranate season starts this week. We are expecting a terrific season. Volumes will be much higher this year, quality is definitely better than it was last year, and I can honestly say that the coloration of the pomegranates is one of the best we’ve ever had. The weather helped play its part in this, we’ve had a very good year in terms of weather.”

According to Gokyigit, the Turks have more than enough large sizes available: “Demand is very high this year, the season hasn’t even started yet and already the orders are coming in. Because of this, we aim to double our pomegranate exports this year, as we’ll have the volumes available to meet this high demand. Unlike the Egyptians and Indians, we have no issues with the sizes. We have more than enough large sizes available for pomegranates, as well as smaller sizes. We’re confident we can deliver whatever the client demands.”

“Alanar’s most important market for pomegranates is definitely Europe. We mostly export to supermarket chains in Germany and Sweden. There’s also solid demand from Canada, we expect to significantly increase our sales in this region. Looking at the other side of the world, Singapore is our main market on the Asian continent,” says Gokyigit. “However we’re always looking to enter new markets, as we’re trying to set foot in the French and Russian markets this year. We’d also like to increase our market share in Northern and Eastern Europe.”

During Fruit Logistica 2019 Alanar announced a program to supply figs year-round, partnering up with Latin American growers. Gokyigit says the exporter aims to do the same with the pomegranates. “We’re still at the project level for growing pomegranates, but our intention is to supply pomegranates year-round once everything is set up and fully tested. Kind of like we have our year-round fig program running right now.”
