The Ailimpo lemon crop estimate for the 2019/2020 season confirms the initial figures released in June (1,110,000 tons.) A global decrease of 15% is expected (-11% in the case of Fino and -24% for Verna), going back to normal volumes after the record crop achieved last year.
No global damage to crop forecast reported as a result of mid-September storms. The Fino Lemon season has just began and will progressively develop to enter full rhythm during October, with good quality and size fruit.
General outlook
With these figures for the 2019/2020 campaign, Spain will continue to consolidate its commercial position in Europe, maintaining unquestionable leadership with quality lemon and excellent service. Spain will also continue to be present in third countries such as Canada, the United States and the Middle East among others.
As far as the processing is concerned, it is estimated that from 20% to 25% of the crop will be processed, an activity in which Spain ranks 2nd in the world, with a wide range of juices, essential oil and dehydrated peel.
Accreditation of GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications, the sector's involvement in sustainability programs and the use of standard contracts approved by the Ministry of Agriculture to comply with Law 12/2013 on measures to improve the functioning of the food chain will be some of the key elements of this season.
