In June 2019, testers from the Consumers Association of Austria (VKI) visited a total of 58 branches of the 13 most important food suppliers in the nation. They had their sights on apples, cucumbers, carrots, peppers and tomatoes, looking to see how many of them were sold, packaged in plastic.
It turned out: "At Hofer, Lidl and Penny, well over 70 percent of the above-mentioned fruit and vegetables are sold in plastic packaging. Even classic supermarkets are no role model when it comes to reducing plastic packaging. At Merkur, Billa, Interspar, MPreis, Spar Gourmet and ADEG, the plastic ratio is well above 60 percent. By far the best in the field was organic provider Denn's. Here only 16 percent of the fruit and vegetables investigated were packaged in plastic. Halfway acceptable was Etsan, with a plastic quota of 38 percent," said the VKI.
