Sebastian Dörmann, Frische aus Westfalen:

"For the next few weeks we hope to see better volumes of cabbage"

Autumn is just around the corner; the last warm days of the year alternate with cold nights. However, the dry summer has left its mark on vegetable cultivation in Germany.

Sebastian Dörmann, of Frische from Westfalen LLC, notes: "At the moment there are no large quantities, that is a problem: broccoli, cauliflower and kohlrabi are scarce. The heat periods here in the area have dried up a lot here in the field, despite irrigation. Moreover, growth has been uneven."

Even the current, cooler temperatures were not ideal: "The low night-time temperatures, partly around 3 or 4° were like putting the handbrakes on development." The prices are currently quite mediocre. "There were also some promotions in the last week, which were very difficult to realize due to the circumstances."

"In Bielefeld, temperatures were rising again in the meantime and so we are confident that the in the next few weeks the volumes will improve again," said the CEO. He wants to harvest various cabbage varieties until mid-November. He also has pumpkins in his assortment.

In terms of overall demand, the kohlrabi is firmly rooted in the German cabbage range and continues to be an important part of the trade, with no major ups and downs. "Cauliflower has had a lull in the meantime, but now everything has returned to normal." The trend towards a healthy diet, especially among young people who eat more consciously, certainly contributes to cabbage," Dörmann concludes.
