Market Report Austria CW 39/2019:

'Stability on the potato market, onion harvest nearing its end'

The Austrian table potato market is looking balanced. With mostly optimal soil conditions, harvesting is progressing rapidly in many places - but there is still no supply pressure. For the manageable harvest, sufficient boxes are available. Supplying the traders is a steady operation. This year, hardly any commodities were held back by  the farmers for speculation. Qualitatively, there are always problems with wireworm, scab, deformations and mouse bites. Overall, however, quality-related sortings are significantly below those of the year before.

The demand side is quite satisfactory. Ongoing promotions in food retail are gaining momentum and are well received by consumers. There is no change in producer prices. In Lower Austria, at the beginning of the week, a price range of 22 Euro / 100 kg. For stored goods up to 28 Euro / 100 kg was mentioned. From Upper Austria, prices of up to 34 Euro / 100 kg were reported unchanged.

Onion harvest ending
With the late summer weather, the onion harvest has progressed well and is now coming to an end. Goods from Lower Austria is accordingly abundant, showing great differences in quality. While domestically, onions of very good quality can be marketed on a regular basis, the export market is currently somewhat subdued. For goods, cleaned and sorted in the box, between 23 and 28 € / 100 kg are paid according to their quality and size.

Carrot demand calm
The Lower Austrian carrot market continues to be stable. The carrots are taken out depending on demand, with the demand being quiet as is normal in this season. Prices remain unchanged at last week's levels.
