Late start to Lome Super Fruit pomegranate harvest

"We have begun with the harvest of pomegranates, starting with those of the Ako variety. We estimate a production of around 100 tons of this variety. The novelties of this year should have been two early varieties, namely the Shari® variety and the Emik® variety, which should have been already marketed starting from the end of August. However, the hailstorms which took place in May destroyed the flowers, leaving the Ako variety as the only early variety to be harvested." This is the situation that Davide De Lisi, production manager of Masseria Fruttirossi, the largest pomegranate producer in Italy based in Castellaneta (Taranto) describes to FreshPlaza.

"Currently 6 hectares of land are being exploited for the harvest of the Ako variety and we expect to increase the number of hectares to 10 starting next year. The fruit is good both in terms of quality and aesthetics, with a Brix degree of 15%. This year, the harvest started with a 15-day delay, due to the cold temperatures in May and early June".

"Also with regard to the harvest of the pomegranates of the Wonderful variety there will certainly be a delay. As a matter of fact, the fruits of this variety are still green, compared to the same period last year, when they already had a more intense colour. As a result, the harvest of this variety will be delayed until mid November".

"Fruits are sold in boxes of several sizes, which can hold from 8 to 12 pieces, depending on the contracts and commercial requirements. Our products are sold to large-scale retail chains and to some foreign and overseas markets, including Canada. The marketing of Masseria Fruttirossi's products, which can be clearly identified by the Lome Super Fruit brand, is handled by the sales office of the B&B Frutta di Bussolengo, located in Verona".

"We inaugurated the plant last October 2. Following a year of activity, we have been able to achieve many successes, also thanks to the diversification of the company. However, we want to aim for the maximum: we intend to become a real point of production and aggregation of the pomegranate production. We test and improve our machines continuously and want to ensure that our customers are offered a unique and tasty product which is entirely made in Italy".
